Authoritarianism<\/em> Rebooted: From Mussolini to MAGA is my attempt to trace those echoes\u2014to understand where they come from, what they mean, and what they\u2019re warning us about. This isn\u2019t a partisan rant. It\u2019s a forensic dive into how democracies fall\u2014not with a bang, but with a shrug. I draw from the sweeping lens of Big History, which looks at everything from the birth of the cosmos to the rise and fall of civilisations. Through that lens, I explore how authoritarianism takes root: from Hitler\u2019s \u201clegal\u201d slide into dictatorship, Mussolini\u2019s manipulation of fear and national pride, and Stalin\u2019s war on truth, to Khomeini\u2019s hijacking of revolution, Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s populist dismantling of institutions, Orb\u00e1n\u2019s modern autocratic blueprint, and North Korea\u2019s cult of dynastic worship. This book doesn\u2019t scream comparisons. It calmly lays them out. Trump\u2019s recent rhetoric\u2014describing opponents as \u201cvermin,\u201d promising \u201cretribution,\u201d and longing for generals like those of Nazi Germany\u2014aren\u2019t just disturbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re historically familiar. They echo the early warning signs seen in regimes that eventually crushed dissent, bent the law to the will of one man, and claimed to speak for an entire people while silencing millions. But I\u2019m not just here to map out the threat. I\u2019m here to show how it can be resisted. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Because history doesn\u2019t just offer warnings\u2014it offers examples of courage. This book is filled with them: the judges who said no, the citizens who refused to be silent, the institutions that (sometimes barely) held the line. It\u2019s a reminder that democracy isn\u2019t self-sustaining\u2014it\u2019s a choice we make, over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why I Wrote This<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This book isn\u2019t just an academic exercise for me. It\u2019s personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve carried a quiet fear about this topic since I was around ten years old. I still remember the day my dad sat me down and made me watch American History X<\/em>. A heavy choice for a kid, maybe\u2014but a necessary one. He wanted me to understand something early: that extremism doesn\u2019t always come charging in. Sometimes it creeps, dressed as patriotism, wrapped in promises, whispering that it knows best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That conversation stayed with me. It shaped the way I looked at the world. It\u2019s why I later studied psychology. Why I\u2019ve spent years fascinated\u2014and horrified\u2014by the rise of authoritarian regimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t just about theory or history books. This is about what I\u2019ve lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As someone who\u2019s half Indian and half Italian, but born and raised in the UK, I\u2019ve been told to \u201cgo back to my own country\u201d<\/strong>\u2014by people living off the very system my parents worked hard to support. The same system they paid into. The same country both sides of my family proudly fought for. And yet, I was the one seen as the outsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racism isn\u2019t abstract. It\u2019s real. It\u2019s personal.<\/strong> And it\u2019s often fuelled by ignorance, fear, and political opportunism\u2014by people who are manipulated into seeing someone like me as the problem, rather than questioning the systems that keep them angry, poor, and misinformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where this book comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is my attempt to make sense of the patterns. To connect the dots between history, ideology, and the lived realities of people who are always \u201cothered\u201d when authoritarian ideas gain traction. It\u2019s about showing that the rise of hatred, division, and autocracy isn\u2019t accidental\u2014it\u2019s rehearsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this book helps just one person see what\u2019s happening more clearly, speak up more loudly, or simply pay closer attention\u2014then it\u2019s done what it needed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
