It’s a lesson that has not only shaped me but also deeply influenced the direction of Josh’s Niche Bureau (JNB).

Criticism often carries a negative connotation. It can feel like an attack or a judgment. But what I’ve come to realise is that, when it comes from the right people—those who genuinely care about you and your success—it’s one of the most valuable tools you can have. Constructive criticism is not about tearing you down; it’s about helping you build something better.

Friends Who Keep You Grounded

If you’re lucky, you have at least one or two people in your life, if not a small handful, who are willing to give you honest feedback—not what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. These are the people who see your potential, even when you don’t. They’re not here to hurt you; they’re here to help you grow.

Recently, I experienced this firsthand. A friend shared some news with me—news I wasn’t expecting. They said, “I want you to know this before someone else tells you because I want you to be prepared. I don’t want you to be blindsided.” That moment reminded me how true friends look out for you, even when the truth might be uncomfortable. They equip you with information, advice, and insights that make you stronger, not weaker.

This same principle applies to how I’ve been navigating JNB. Over the past months, I’ve received feedback on nearly every aspect of my work—from how I stand and present myself, to how I approach conversations, to the content and design of my website. Every comment, no matter how small, has been a gift. It has allowed me to refine my approach, not only as a professional but also as an individual.

Taking a Step Back

When I launched the initial version of the JNB website, I knew it wasn’t perfect. At the time, I just needed something tangible—something to say, “Here’s where I am, and here’s what I offer.” But a month and a half later, I took a step back, reassessed, and realised I wasn’t happy with it. I knew I could do better.

That’s the beauty of constructive criticism—it teaches you to reflect and improve. Armed with the insights of trusted friends and colleagues, I’m now working on a revamped version of the site, one that truly embodies the essence of JNB. This process isn’t about changing who I am or what the business stands for; it’s about refining, evolving, and becoming more aligned with my vision.

Growth Through Feedback

The willingness to accept constructive criticism has also helped me focus on myself. I’m not trying to change who I am. Instead, I’m working on areas that need improvement—areas that could use more resilience, strength, or clarity. This ongoing process of self-improvement is one of the driving forces behind JNB.

This concept isn’t just limited to personal growth or business—it’s also incredibly prevalent in the world of fashion. Fashion critics are often criticised for their critiques, but if it weren’t for their willingness to call out stagnation or push for innovation, the industry wouldn’t evolve. Without their insights, trends wouldn’t shift, designs wouldn’t adapt, and the direction of fashion itself could stall. Critique, when given thoughtfully, is a catalyst for change, creativity, and progress.

Gratitude and Perspective

As we move into the new year, I want to express my gratitude to those who have shared their thoughts and opinions with me. Every comment, critique, and suggestion has been a sign of care and support. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the people standing just outside your immediate circle have a perspective you can’t see.

If someone in your life is offering constructive criticism, take a moment to appreciate it. They’re not here to diminish you; they’re here to help you shine. And if you feel like someone’s feedback isn’t coming from a place of care, perhaps it’s worth questioning the value they bring to your life.

Looking Ahead

This year, I’m embracing the lessons I’ve learned and using them to refine JNB further. I’m excited about what’s to come—not just for the business, but for my personal journey as well. Growth, after all, is an ongoing, evolving process.

To anyone reading this, I encourage you to welcome constructive criticism into your life. Be open to the insights of others. Use them to reflect, refine, and redefine. Growth doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens through connection, collaboration, and a willingness to learn.

Here’s to a year of keeping going, growing, and glowing—together.

Ciao for now,

– Josh

FOUNDERS DIARY: ENTRY 06.01.25: The Gift of Constructive Criticism: A Reflection for the New Year As we step into a new year, I find myself reflecting on a powerful lesson I’ve learned over the past few months: the value of constructive criticism and the role it plays in personal and professional growth.
